Occultist scares residents of Pallikkaranai to the bone

CHENNAI: For a month now, people living in and around the Labour Colony in Pallikkaranai are too scared to step out of their houses in the night as an occultist has been practising strange rituals on an open burial ground in the area.
It is said that every night a 25-year-old youth virtually drags a 12-year- old girl to the ground, her hair let down, a huge vermilion dot on her forehead and large stripes of vibhuti all over her body.
Thereafter she is made to sit on the place where a body has just been cremated and he starts performing gory ‘‘rituals,’’ while all the time chanting some mumbo-jumbo. A few people stand guard; to prevent outsiders from venturing in and also to ensure that the girl does not run away in fright.
There is no electric lighting anywhere in the ground and the rituals are gone through in almost total darkness. The only faint light is from the lamp the occultist carries with him.
After the rituals are through in about half an hour, the occultist goes to tie some strands of hair to a tree. The whole thing is very scary. Those who have managed to take a sneak look at the goings on or hear the weird sounds of the incantations have experienced a chill down the spine.
Some youngsters said, almost in whispers, that they had seen the man walking towards the burial ground at night with a hen in one hand and a knife in the other. Such stories fly thick and fast all over the area.
During daytime the occultist could be seen moving around just like any others in slacks and trousers, but most people would run indoors to bolt themselves up on seeing him.
Some families have sent away their women to their relatives’ houses fearing something ill could befall them because of the sorcery. Residents have begun to attribute even incidents of fever among children to the occultist.
But not many would dare speak openly about him or his practices. Why incur his wrath seems to be their attitude.
When contacted, the local police said they have not received any complaints of witchcraft, but all the same promised to look into the matter to ensure the safety of the residents of the area.
